The ‘gender sensitization cell’ of Sikkim Govt. B.Ed. College, Soreng, in collaboration with the college’s ‘literary club’ organized a manthan on the increasing rape cases in India. The discourse session was given the title ‘Breaking the silence on sexual violence’.
The session took place at the college’s library. It started at around 12 a.m. 30 people, approximately, (trainees and assistant professors) participated in the session. A documentary by ‘The Quint’ titled ‘Rape is consensual - Inside Haryana’s Rape Culture’ was shown in the beginning. After the video, two questions for the session were put forward - (i) What are the reasons for increase in rapes? (ii) Are rapes consensual?
The session saw a wide variety of individual perspectives from the trainees as well as the assistant professors. The different reasons for the increase in rapes were put forward by the individuals and the discussions on whether they are truly one of the reasons took place. The session ended with a short discussion on “What we as educators can do to prevent or at least decrease the number of rapes?”
In a nutshell, the session was quite an informative one in which every individual put forward her/his perspectives and at the same time listened to the perspectives put forward by other participants.
